The Place

Prairie District Lofts is a multifamily residential condominium building located in Chicago’s near southside Prairie District.

The Challenge

Being a condominium building in a highly competitive market, Prairie District Lofts worked hard to retain residents and attract new tenants.

However, the building lacked stand-out luxury amenities to give the property managers an edge on other multifamily buildings in the area. 

Around this same time, the COVID-19 outbreak hit Chicago hard, leading to the city going on full lockdown. 

Residents were quarantined nearly 24-hours a day in their unit, and were on edge when they were forced to leave their homes to pick up groceries or curbside pickup from the few restaurants that remained open during the pandemic.

Then a nearby restaurant – The Spoke & Bird – reached out with an idea.

“We began working with 2ndKitchen months ago, acting as a virtual room service for the Hilton. We thought, why not offer the same room service to our neighbors at Prairie District Lofts,” said Scott Golas, co-owner of The Spoke & Bird.

The Solution

The Spoke & Bird introduced Prairie District Lofts to the 2ndKitchen virtual room service platform and team. 

Within a few days, the building was completely onboarded with a brand-new luxury food delivery experience – complete with physical food menus, an easy-to-use online ordering interface, a rotating food menu of daily specials, and free door-to-door delivery.

“It’s super easy to use, just point your phone camera at the QR code at the bottom of the menu and you’re transported to the PDL room service site where you can place your order,” said Scott. “You’re not charged any delivery fees and you’ll find the same prices had you walked across the street and ordered.”

Residents now had the luxury of ordering a variety of food items from all-day breakfast, deli sandwiches, salads, soups, and beverages 7 days a week from 7am to 4pm – all from the safety of their homes.

The Result

Upon announcing the new amenity, residents showed their enthusiasm for the new service on the Prairie District Lofts’ Facebook page.

“This is so kind and amazing! You guys are awesome! Stay safe and healthy,” said resident Sara Hoffman.

“Yay! I grabbed lunch from you today! Delicious as always!” said resident Michele Kerulis.

“Thank you, this is amazing! We will be ordering,” said resident Joyce Damasceno.

In the first week of using the service, the building had one of the highest orders placed among 2ndKitchen partners – and lightning-fast delivery times under 30 minutes. All while dealing with the logistical issues of a city-wide lockdown.

The high number of orders also helped support The Spoke & Bird during a difficult time to operate a restaurant, as well as their food partners down the supply chain.

“Given the current environment, this new service is helping us keep the small farms we work with operating, our team employed and continue bringing our community a healthy food option.”
