Indiana’s craft beer scene has never been stronger and producing such innovation. Ranging from small taprooms to large brewpubs, each brewery has its own unique spin and offers something for every palate.

Brewing in Indiana is a big deal. With over 180 different breweries to choose from in Indiana, the state ranks 15th for the most number of craft breweries in the US. Over the years, these brewpubs and breweries have created the majority of employment growth in Indiana. There are now close to 8,000 full time employees in Indiana’s craft brewing industry, which creates an economic impact of more than $1 billion

With a fantastic lineup of beers, there’s no doubt why this brewery is one of the most visited locations in Indianapolis. The name “deviate” is much more than a name; it’s a philosophy that guides how things are run in this nearly two-decade-old establishment. 

They are well known for taking classic food flavor pairings and incorporating them into a beer (like the Watermelon Mint Ale or Blueberry Tarragon Ale).

Windmill Brewing opened in 2015 with the goal to break the mold of craft beer’s current IPA craze. As a result, the brewery offers a variety of experimental sour ales, barrel-aged barleywines and lighter classic European styles.

The brewery’s tap room serves its flagship and seasonal brews, including its Pale Dutch Boy American Pale Ale, orange juice-infused Memosea IPA and cinnamon and maple syrup-flavored Hey Mikey Imperial Oatmeal Stout.

Bare Hands Brewery opened in December 2011 with a mission to handcraft small batches of beer with the highest quality ingredients. Owned and operated by South Bend native Chris Gerard, all brewing at Bare Hands is done on site in the Granger brewery.

Its brews are available on 10 rotating taps in the brewpub, and distributed on limited supply throughout Indiana. The brewery also offers a small food menu to complement the brews.

Black Acre Brewing Co. is a small batch craft brewery that was opened in 2012 by a group of five homebrewers and former law students. Just three years later, the company opened a second production facility so they could distribute their unique brews throughout Indiana.

The brewery uses a small three-barrel electric brewing system and is focused on seasonal and speciality ales. Its taproom features a variety of rotating brews on tap, along with growler fills, to-go sales and a few food menu items.

Iechyd Da Brewing Company is a brewery and restaurant that first opened in 2011 by homebrewers Summer and Chip Lewis. It’s named after the traditional Welsh toast which translates to “good health.” A variety of ales named after local landmarks and references to the owners’ Welsh heritage are offered as standard brews.

The Indiana City Brewing Co. is situated where a former Indianapolis pre-Prohibition bottling house once stood. It opened its doors in 2013 and serves high-quality ales out of its garage-style tap room.

To date, the nanobrewery has crafted more than 30 small-batch brews, many of which have won awards. Its tap room offers year-round pints and growlers, along with limited releases that include a bourbon barrel-aged series.

Having opened to the public in 2015, the New Oberpfalz Brewing microbrewery is named for Bavaria’s Oberpfalz brewing region. The brewery includes a tap room and restaurant, serving a rotating selection of the brewery’s German-style ales and lagers.

One of their brews, the flagship traditional Helles Lager, received a gold medal at the 2017 U.S. Open Beer Championship. Guest drafts from other local breweries are also tapped, along with wine and hard cider options.

Metazoa Brewing Company opened just a few years ago in 2016. The owners are very committed to helping animal and wildlife organizations, donating five percent of all its proceeds to local animal-focused organizations.

Its pet-friendly taproom offers drafts and tastings of the brewery’s uniquely flavored and cleverly-named ales, including its Moose Grapefruit IPA, Don’t Be Tarty Blackberry Kolsch, Game of Bones Biere de Garde and Buzz Like Bees Coffee Porter.

Upland opened in 1997 and is the third largest brewery in Indiana, with six locations across the state. It currently has over 80 beers in its brew rotation, including popular craft beers such as Upland Wheat and Upland Dragonfly IPA.

Upland won gold at the Great American Beer Festival in 2002, in the Fruit Wheat Ale Category for its popular Wheat Ale. Upland was also the brand of choice in the popular TV show ‘Parks and Recreation’, making several appearances in the show.

Sun King Brewing is Indianapolis’ largest brewery and the second-largest throughout the state. The massive brewery is located across a three-building campus.

The brewery also offers food and hosts live performances and special events. Standard brews include the brewery’s year-round Wee Mac Scottish Ale, Osiris Pale Ale, and Sunlight Cream Ale, while limited release beers include its award-winning Java Mac Scottish Ale and barrel-aged Pappy van Muckle.
